JEE advanced is quite difficult. It is not easy. JEE Mains is not that difficult and reasonably easy. JEE Advanced requires almost double the amount of effort. Part of the reason for the difficulty is in the fact that it is competitive. If JEE was made more of a benchmark exam, people will test them on things that the students know. Currently, they are trying to test the students on things that they do not know.

In my opinion, JEE Advanced should be simplified further. As of now, it is quite difficult because it involves cumbersome calculation, and mixed concepts. It is quite difficult for a school student or a student who has just finished school to crack it. But competitiveness is so high now, that ultimately JEE does not want so many students. Only 20,000 students are selected out of some 15 lakh students who appear for the exam. In the first level about 2 lakh students are selected, and from that the final 20,000 students are selected. The turnover is a one percent selection ratio. And simply because of such a limited selection ratio, JEE is a hard exam.

To get into a good IIT and choose a preferred stream, the student should aim for an All India Rank less than 3,000.
