Delivering feedback the right way

There are ways to give negative feedback while taking care to minimise the threat response

Feedback — both positive and negative — is vital to help managers enhance their best qualities and deal with their worst so they can excel at leading. Unfortunately, strength-based development can convince people into believing there are no aspects in which they need to improve. Therefore, instead of encouraging people to avoid negative feedback, we should concentrate on how to deliver it in ways that lessen the fight-or-flight reaction. One method is called Situation-Behaviour-Impact. Feedback providers first record the time and place in which a behaviour took place. They then describe the behaviour — what they saw and heard. The ultimate step is to describe the effect the behaviour had, as expressed by the feedback providers’ thoughts, feelings or actions. Read the full article from Harvard Business Review here
