Learn life-long, and never underestimate anyone, says MM Murugappan

Take up challenges to navigate towards an ocean of opportunities, chief guest tells IIM-Trichy students

The Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli (IIM-Trichy) hosted the seventh annual convocation last week, where it awarded degrees to students of the Post-Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM) and the Post-Graduate Programme in Business Management (PGPBM) at the institute’s campus. The students were awarded the degree of Master of Business Administration (MBA), instead of a diploma, following the implementation of the IIM Act.

MM Murugappan, Executive Chairman, Murugappa Group, was chief guest at the event. Bhimaraya Metri, Director, IIM Tiruchirappalli, presented the Director’s report, followed by Jalaj Dani, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM Tiruchirappalli awarding degrees to 169 graduands of PGPM and 41 graduands of the PGPBM.

Performance and achievements

The Director, in his report, highlighted the institute’s achievement during the academic year 2018-2019. He said the past year saw a tremendous increase in students’ achievements, research publications from faculty, more executive education programmes and over 40 guest speakers shared their wisdom with the students.

He listed five mantras of success to the passing out batch, which were: making one’s uncomfortable zone comfortable, having laser focus on goals, leading change, excelling in respective fields and being committed to lifelong learning.

Vision for self

Jalaj Dani, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM-Trichy, in his address, appreciated the government’s move to provide autonomy to the institute and said such autonomy would promote innovation in pedagogy. He addressed the students as leaders of tomorrow and urged them to abide by their values throughout their life. He advised the students to unleash themselves from any constraints and make the best use of their unique skills and capabilities to achieve success in this dynamic world.

MM Murugappan urged the IIM-Trichy students to lead the world in battling various key issues such as global warming, climate change and the potable water crisis in a sustainable manner. He asked the students to take up challenges in their career, so as to navigate towards an ocean of opportunities. He said there are three key factors to remember: never underestimate anyone; learn to learn; and build long-lasting relationships. He advised the students to have a vision for themselves and stated that the only security in life is one’s ability, and that IIM Trichy has played a big role in building such ability.

Achievements and awards

The chief guest presented medals and awards to the following students for their meritorious achievements and all-round performance:

1. IIM Tiruchirappalli Chairperson’s Gold Medal and and the ICSI Signature Award Gold Medal for securing the first rank in Post-Graduate Programme in Management,were awarded to Deepesh Agarwal.

2. IIM Tiruchirappalli Director’s Gold Medal for securing second rank in PGPM was awarded to Jagtap Sachin Suresh.

3. Canara Bank Gold Medal for securing third rank in PGPM and the Punjab National Bank Gold Medal for securing first rank among women students in PGPM were awarded to Cherukupalli Sravani.

4. HDFC Bank Gold Medal for academic proficiency in Finance and Accounting in PGPM was bagged by Mayank Kumar Pansari.

5. HDFC Bank Gold Medal for academic proficiency in Marketing in PGPM and the Kotak Securities Gold Medal for Best All Round Performance in PGPM was bagged by Arun A.

6. Leela Chandrasekhara Menon Award for the ‘Outstanding Lady Student of the Year’ in PGPM was awarded to Nandhini N.

7. IIM Tiruchirappalli Chairperson’s Gold Medal for securing the first rank in Post Graduate Programme in Business Management was bagged by Jeyesh Jeykhar J S

8. IIM Tiruchirappalli Director’s Gold Medal for securing second rank in PGPBM was bagged by KVV Raghavan.

9. Punjab National Bank Gold Medal for the Best All Round Performance in PGPBM was given to Nandakumar R.
