‘Strong EQ, leadership and passion needed to succeed’

CK Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director, CavinKare was speaking at IIM-T’s convocation

The sixth annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Management Tiruchirappalli (IIM-T), for the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM) courses, was held on March 24 on the college campus.

The guest of honour, CK Ranganathan, Chairman and Managing Director, CavinKare, in his address, congratulated the graduands on their achievement. He observed that MBA graduates tend to compare themselves with their batchmates, which isn’t a healthy practice. Everyone has to follow their own path so students should count success in terms of the number of people they have impacted or helped, rather than needlessly competing with each other. He said that academics provides an excellent platform to start this journey, but that is not enough to reach the destination we aim for.

He also stressed on the importance of having a good emotional quotient (EQ), which includes managing oneself and others. He recommended self improvement books that helped him grow as an individual and as an entrepreneur. “To succeed in a business world, one needs strong EQ, leadership, the ability to inspire people and passion,” he said. He urged the students to develop the habit of reading something relevant to their work or what they were pursuing, and concluded by saying that thinking is important for them to realise their full potential.

Chief guest KP Krishnan, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, in his address, told the students that learning knows no bounds, and that would take them from strength to strength in whatever career they pursue. He said that education has two dimensions — intrinsic and extrinsic. He stressed that skills for employability are emerging as a priority globally and there is a demand for new kinds of skills with technological advancements. This is where entrepreneurship will play a huge role. He advised them to learn and unlearn, and unlearn and learn.

Director’s Report

Jalaj Dani, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM-T, awarded the diplomas to one FPM graduate, 176 PGP graduates and 18 PGPBM graduates. Bhimaraya Metri, Director, IIM-T, presented the Director’s Report.

The Director, in his report, remarked that the occasion is special, as 176 PGP students, 18 PGPBM students and the first FPM student graduated this year on the new campus. He commended the placement process, which saw the participation of 95 companies for the PGP 2017-19 batch. The institute conducted six Insight Guest Lectures and two Distinguished Speaker Series this year. Metri wished the graduands with some mantras of success, hoping that they stand out in the corporate world. “Aim high, set yourselves Himalayan-sized goals, have focus, keep learning and unlearning (make learning a life-long habit), be the first to adopt new ideas and technology and maintain high standards of integrity,” he said.

Chairman Dani, in his address, congratulated the graduating students and requested them to uphold the highest standards of the institute and make everyone proud. He reminded them that IIM-T is their home and requested them to come back.
