MBA needs an entrepreneurship angle to it’

Simeran Bhasin, Chief Marketing Officer of Wildcraft, feels it's important that students are clear about why they are doing an MBA

Simeran Bhasin is Chief Marketing officer of Wildcraft, the brand for outdoor gear and backpacks. A commerce graduate from Lady Shri Ram College and an MBA from T.A. Pai Management Institute, Manipal (TAPMI, 2001 batch), Bhasin had a long stint in Titan Co Ltd stewarding the Fastrack brand.

She was part of the team which was involved in growing the Fastrack brand and also spinning it off from the Titan fold as a separate brand which later forayed from watches into accessories like sun glasses and bags and now helmets.

In a conversation on learnings from her MBA at TAPMI ( Click here to view a video interview ), Bhasin says that it’s important that students are clear about why they are doing an MBA. Very often they don’t.

“Very few people are clear about what they want to do and what they don’t want to do. I find it heartening when I meet a student who is very clear on what they want to do and what their strengths and weaknesses are and you know here is someone who has clarity of thought; that is important. There are a number of people who have been herded into engineering and MBA and then a couple of years into that journey they realise they don’t enjoy it and then do a lot of soul-searching,” she says.

She’s glad that the younger gen of today can stand up to peer group and parental pressure and go off the beaten path which also explains the mushrooming of start-ups in a variety of businesses. “One’s exposure to the business world in B-school also needs an entrepreneurship angle to it,” adds Bhasin.
