Mpower sets up cell at BITS Pilani Hyd

The cell offers counselling for students and staff seeking professional help for mental health issues

Mpower, mental healthcare player backed by Aditya Birla Education Trust, opened its Cell at BITS Pilani Hyderabad campus to provide one-to-one counselling and quality clinical interventions to students, faculty, and on-campus staff.

“Mental health challenges among youth is a pressing issue. For college students in their formative years, mental health can make or break their careers,” Neerja Birla, Founder and Chairperson, Mpower, said, in a release. “At Mpower Cells, we endeavour to help people open up about their mental health concerns, and seek professional help. We also work to dispel the stigma around mental illness and empower individuals and their families to foster nurturing environments,” she added.

G Sundar, Director, BITS Pilani Hyderabad,said: “As a result of the pandemic, students have been gravely impacted. With pre-planned schedules disrupted and no definitive solutions in sight, students’ mental health was affected. To remedy the situation, we took a collaborative approach, and launched the Mpower Cell on our campus.”

Since the onset of the pandemic, Mpower has intensified its efforts to alleviate the stigma around mental health through various initiatives. Some of these include Mpower one-on-one 24x7 helpline which has seen over 78,000 calls, Mpower eClinic for tier 2 towns, ‘Minds Matter’ school curriculum, mental health counselling and therapy for Mumbai Police and healthcare workers, and rural mental health project in Jalna.

So far Mpower has expanded its clinical footprint to cities across the country including a Centre in Kolkata, and a Cell in Birla College, Kalyan, with plans to launch a Centre Pune as well, during this year, the release said.
