It took guts to be the first tattoo queen

Maud Wagner was a skilled tattoo artist

Did you know Maud Wagner was the first-known female tattoo artist in the United States? In an entirely male-dominated space, she learnt the secrets of the trade from her husband Gus Wagner, who claimed to have learned his tattoo technique from tribesmen in Java and Borneo.

According to this article in Messy Nessy , Maud wasn't just a tattoo artist but also an enthusiast with a large part of her torso covered with designs by her husband. There have been only two other recorded cases of women with tattoos before Maud, and both women claimed that getting tattooed wasn't their choice. At the time (late 1800s and early 1900s), women were shamed for sporting tattoos.
