GST assessee behaviour a matter of concern: FinMin

At present, about 70 per cent of the taxpayers have filed GSTR 3B

Apart from the IT glitches that have made return filing under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) difficult, the Finance Ministry is also worried about the behaviour of assessees as most chose to wait till the last day.

The Ministry is also looking to make compliance under GST easier for small taxpayers. "The serious concern is assessee behaviour. Almost everyone wants to wait till the last day for filing returns,” said a source, adding that even now over 1,000 returns are being filed on a daily basis.

September 20 was the last date for filing GSTR- 3B returns for the month of August. But many taxpayers had complained of long waits for uploading the return. At present, about 70 per cent of the taxpayers have filed GSTR 3B.

Government sources also said that the GST Network has the capacity for large number of filings but the system will have to be built over capacity. At present, there are nearly one crore businesses registered with the GSTN, and the number will increase further, said the source.

The Finance Ministry is also confident of tax collections under GST. “The revenue is looking fine. State compensation for July and August have been adjusted,” said the source.
