Trucking food from Bengaluru to Srinagar

Lalit hotels’ trucks will begin a month-long journey across the country in January

Remember the Jon Favreau-starrer comedy film Chef , where he drives a food truck serving Cuban sandwiches across the US? Well, come January, The Lalit Food Truck Company, the outdoor catering division of The Lalit Suri Hospitality Group, will do something similar — it will begin a month-long food trail across India.

“One food truck will travel to another, which will then travel to the third, and so on, creating a trail. This will cover eight Lalit hotels in the country starting from Bengaluru and all the way to Srinagar,” Keshav Suri, Executive Director, The Lalit Suri Hospitality, told BusinessLine .

The food truck, the first mobile restaurant launched by the Group, is part of its foray into the outdoor catering business. It currently offers churros, quesadillas, tacos, falafel, burgers and milkshakes, among other items, for under ₹350.

“During the trail, I plan to do a bit of CSR activity as well. We plan to go to local orphanages, NGOs and offer food,” Suri added. The company owns three trucks currently and plans to get a couple more for the trail. Each truck is operated by four people.

Post the trail, it also plans to roll out trucks offering pizzas. “In the next four months, we will launch the first pizza truck in Delhi. A pizza is the easiest thing to sell in the world but a good pizza is hard to find,” he said, adding that a New York-style giant pizza slice will be priced between ₹250 and ₹350.

On the experience so far, Suri said it has its share of issues like getting licences for the business. Unlike the West, the concept is new in India.
