Recruiters want students with good domain knowledge: Great Lakes’ Director

Debashis Sanyal added that having a grasp of AI, machine learning and analytics is useful for students

Dr Debashis Sanyal, Director, Great Lakes Institute of Management, Gurgaon, said that recruiters today want to hire students with strong domain knowledge in particular areas, such as marketing or operations or finance, which can be coupled with skills in analytics. “Recruiters also love to see good domain knowledge along with knowledge of AI, machine learning, and so on,” Prof Sanyal said, in an interview to BusinessLine On Campus .

Prof Sanyal said the challenge was how to manage downstream customer requirements. Great Lakes works closely with industry in Gurugram. “We have them on board while preparing the curriculum as well,” he said. Manufacturing and service industries abound in Gurugram, he added. “We don’t lose any opportunity to invite them to the campus, to deliver talks and interact with the students.”

Prof Sanyal said the slowdown has indeed impacted the recruitment market. “But the good part of it is that, from the beginning, we have been pioneers in AI, ML and analytics, and our students are being recruited in the services sector, which is not as badly hit as manufacturing is. I am expecting better placements this year as new companies have shown interest; at least 15-20 per cent new companies will be coming in,” he said.
