How Mario saved the video game industry

When the industry crashed in 1983, Nintendo’s Mario revived the interest in console video games

If you’re a kid who grew up in the 90s, then your childhood would have had Super Mario Bros video game for sure. Well, Mario turned 30 on September 13!

While Mario did become a very important part of your childhood, did you know that it also helped the gaming industry from existence, in 1983? Yes. To understand more about that phase, Mashable spoke with Blake J Harris, the author of Console Wars: Sega, Nintendo and the Battle that Defined a Generation.

According to Harris, video game industry crashed in 1983. So bad was the phase that even retailers who bought these video games thought the industry was dead. “In hindsight, that might seem ridiculous, given that video games are now a $60 billion-a-year industry. But at the time, I don't think it was that strange. With the personal computer revolution happening, it's very conceivable that [gaming] could have shifted to playing games on the computer and not any dedicated console,” he is quoted as saying in the article.

That’s when Nintendo decided to step in. Harris explains it as David vs Goliath situation. Why? Because the market was so dead against video game business then, that no one wanted to buy video games. After a lot of hurdles, they finally sold the product as an ‘entertainment system’.
