IIM Ranchi students get leadership lessons from Venkaiah Naidu

The Vice-President delivered a talk on ‘Leadership and Good Governance in Indian Context’

IIM Ranchi’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre for Leadership, Policy, and Governance (ABVCLPG) aims to conduct multidisciplinary research in the domains of leadership, policy, and governance. It hopes to become a vibrant knowledge centre that takes forward conversations in leadership, policy and governance, and makes the lives of citizens better.

As a part of the lecture series, the Centre organised a talk on “Leadership and Good Governance in Indian Context” on February 16 at Ranchi University. M Venkaiah Naidu, Vice-President, and Draupadi Murmu, Governor of Jharkhand, were the distinguished guests. Prof Shailendra Singh, Director, IIM Ranchi, delivered the welcome speech.

Good governance

The Vice-President explained what leadership means in governance and gave various examples. He said that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Centre has the potential to become a global think-tank that nurtures policy professionals and thought leaders through research on leadership strategies, policy skills and governance mechanisms.

“People will benefit from the interactive lectures, group discussions, leadership training, personality development and networking opportunities...We are living in a world of LPG — liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation. This throws at us several opportunities and challenges,” he said.

Draupadi Murmu said that good governance is key to any nation’s progress and that is the path to poverty reduction and sustainable development. She said that corruption and delay in justice need to be addressed to facilitate good governance, and pointed out how empowerment of women and socially and economically weaker sections will help in development at large.

Praveen Shankar Pandya, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIM Ranchi, said that there is a need to design the framework of mining policies for Jharkhand which would help the State.
