KJ Somaiya college student designs vents for PPE suits

The compact ventilation system designed by Nihaal Singh Adarsh aims to increase air flow and bring comfort to frontline workers

Nihaal Singh Adarsh, a student from K J Somaiya College of Engineering, has designed ‘Cov-Tech Ventilation System,’ an add-on component to increase air flow in PPE suits to bring comfort to front-line medical workers. Known as Watt Technovations, the start-up was incubated at Research Innovation Incubation Design Laboratory (riidl), Somaiya Vidyavihar University.

 

 

 

 

The device is equipped with appropriate electronic components which enable it to suck in air from the surrounding outside and pump it inside the suit. Keeping user safety in mind, the device is cleverly designed to filter the air before pumping it inside. Consequently, the hot & humid air inside the suit is forcefully pushed out. Due to this, a continuous flow of fresh, filtered air is maintained inside the PPE suit. As the suit now has developed a positive pressure inside, it also reduces the chances of any contamination from outside to enter into the suit. The device is equipped with a 2A charger and Balance Charging Technology that enables fast charging in about four hours.

Nihaal Singh Adarsh, received the NIDHI Prayas grant of ₹10,00,000 from Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, for prototype development and product innovation with the help of riidl. The start-up also received a support of ₹5,00,000 from New Venture Investment Program (a joint program conducted by riidl and K J Somaiya Institute of Management).
