Placements at NIT AP up at 79 p.c. despite pandemic

244 students got placements with average package of ₹6.50 lakh

Despite the pandemic, the National Institute of Technology Andhra Pradesh has registered an increase in placements during 2020-21. As many as 244 students out of the 310 that have registered for the placement drive have received job offers. “About 79 per cent of the students have got the placements in 2020-21 as against 70.62 per cent in 2019-20, with average package of ₹6.47 lakh,” Karthikeya Sharma, Associate Dean (Training and Placements), NIT Andhra Pradesh, said.

“Due to the pandemic, companies have started hiring only when there is a project on their hand. In the past, they would hire students to show the numbers to bag projects. Realising this, we have decided to invite more number of companies to the campus. Reaching out more companies helped us to secure a good number of placements,” he said.

The number of companies that visited the campus has gone up to 68 in 2020-21 from 47 in the previous year. The list of recruiting firms include L&T, Deloitte, Accenture, TCS, Infosys and Cognizant. “The curriculum has been revised for the batch admitted in 2020-21 based on the New Education Policy (NEP)-2020 and future industry needs,” C S P Rao, Director of NIT Andhra Pradesh, said.

Coding skills

With the hiring numbers in non-IT companies are coming down, the students from non-IT branches were asked to improve their coding skills. “We encourage encourage them to get internships in top companies and to work on some mini projects besides registering for online courses,” he said.

The institute, the 31 in the network of NITs in the country, houses 2,025 students, including 1,868 under-graduate students, 54 post-graduate students and 103 PhD students.
