A woman, who thought she was donating a couple of boxes of electronic junk, ended up donating a vintage Apple-1, one of 200 computers built for the first time by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ron Wayne.
Valley-based recycling company CleanBayArea sold the rare item at a private auction for $200,000, and is now trying to locate the woman so that they can give her 50 per cent of the earnings, i.e $100,000. "We couldn't believe our eyes, we thought it was fake. It was real," said Victor Gichun, CleanBayArea's vice-president.
The computers were designed and manufactured in 1976, and were priced at $666.66 at the time. An Apple-1 computer, sold last year at an auction at Bonhams in New York, was estimated at a little under a million dollars, which is the highest price at which such a device has been sold.
