Chrysler recalls cars in fear of ‘hacking’

In a first, Chrysler recalled 1.4 million cars after some were found to be vulnerable to hacks

In today’s day and age of technology, ‘hacking’ has become an oft-heard term. Be it hacking to access government websites to defame and slander or conducting ‘hackathons’ for a cause, hacking is the new silent protest.

American automobile company Fiat Chrysler recalled 1.4 million cars off the roads ‘out of an abundance of caution’, it said, after it was found that its cars, which are connected to the internet to give the drivers a handsfree experience of doing things such as turning on the radio or checking messages on the phone, according to an article on TechCrunch.

Chrysler’s move comes following an experiment done by a magazine to hack its way into the dashboard of a Jeep Cherokee and control not just the radio, but also the air conditioning in the vehicle. The pre-emptive move, Chrysler said, was just a precautionary measure and that its software was very difficult to manipulate. “The software manipulation addressed by this recall required unique and extensive technical knowledge, prolonged physical access to a subject vehicle and extended periods of time to write code,” it said.
