Could the video you watched on Facebook be stolen?

Numerous complaints against stolen videos being uploaded on the social networking site, surface

How many times have you watched an adorable video and fallen in love with the adorable cats or look in awe at stunts performed? Turns out, these could very well be stolen videos!

According to an article on Mashable, there are numerous videos that are stolen. For instance, Destin Sandlin, whose stolen video on Facebook garnered more views than his original one on YouTube.

Data start-up brought forth a revelation — that some of the social networking giant’s most successful video rely on borrowed — or stolen — content.

Complaints galore

Creators of these videos have been venting their complaints for months. Mashable says that stolen video content is clearly gaining massive traction on Facebook, something the company wants as it looks to overtake YouTube and eventually introduce lucrative video ads.

Facebook spokesperson said that the site’s “audible magic” is meant to prevent upload of unauthorised content, and reporting tools allow copyright holders to take down videos. But despite 200 notices being sent to the social networking giant about just one account, it is still active.

Fixing this, however, is entirely up to Facebook.
