After incorporating a friendly ‘a’ in the Facebook logo, the social media giant has made subtle changes to its icons by putting the female silhouettes in a more prominent position, Mashable reported.
The female silhouette in the Friends and Groups icon on Facebook was previously in the background. Now, however, the man and woman silhouette is pictured side by side. In the Groups icon, the woman is in the foreground, though fewer still in the icon, said the Mashable report.
Changed symbolism
Facebook design manager Caitlin Winner explained in a blog post, “As a woman, educated at a women’s college, it was hard not to read into the symbolism of the current icon; the woman was quite literally in the shadow of the man, she was not in a position to lean in.”
The website said the female silhouette was rather poorly designed. “The iconic man was symmetrical, except for his spiked hairdo but the lady had a chip in her shoulder,” wrote Winner.
