Inflow vs outflow: Chinese students at American Universities

According to a report by WholeRen, a Pittsburgh-based consultancy, about 8,000 students from China were expelled from American universities and colleges in 2013-4. Around 80 per cent of the students were removed for cheating or failing classes. While earlier, Chinese graduate students came on scholarships, and lived on tight budgets, today they come from some of China’s wealthiest and most powerful families. This scale of presence has led brands to capitalise; Bergdorf Goodman, the New York City-based department store, sponsored Chinese New Year celebrations at NYU and Columbia, while Bloomingdales organized a fashion show for Chinese students at their shopping center in Chicago.
