Top B-Schools eye Cuba as nation opens up

European, US-based b-schools been laying ground for possible expansion in Cuba

As diplomatic ties strengthen between the US and Cuba after decades of mutual distrust, the Caribbean island-nation can open up lucrative opportunities for business schools, according to a new BusinessBecause article.

European and the US-based business schools are laying the grounds for possible expansion in Cuba for some years now. While US B-schools are among the best across the world, their European counterparts are posing tough competition. ESADE Business School, for instance, has worked with the Cuban education ministry to strengthen the management of organisations.

B-Schools from the US are making their moves too. New York-based Columbia Business School is among the few that took advantage of the opportunity to take study trips to Cuba. In the last three years, it has taken about 120 students there.

NYU Stern's programme, titled Doing Business in Cuba, allowed 80 MBA students from Stern to visit Havana. The course at the B-School also included field trips, talks by Cuban economists and lectures by Cuban professors.

MBA students from the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, recently visited Cuba right after US President Barack Obama and his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro struck a deal to normalise relations, BusinessBecause said.

It is education first, companies later. Corporate giants may also want to partner with B-Schools in Cuba in the coming days.
