UK's Tata Steel workers agree for strike

Unions collectively represent 17,000 steel workers

Tata Steel workers, who are members of the Unite union have agreed upon going on strike to protest the closing of British Steel pension scheme, according to BBC.

The pension proposals state, workers will require to work for five years more before they start receiving full pension. The new proposal asks workers to retire at 65 rather than 60.

Unite has followed the suit, after steel unions - Community, GMB and Ucatt had voted for strike action. If the strike continues it will be first to happen after 30 years.

These unions collectively represent about 17,000 steel workers.

The move came, when Tata had released an open letter to its employees, which said the UK operations of the company were facing losses and the pension scheme accounted for a shortfall of more than £2 billion, BBC reported.

The unions on the other hand claim, they have already offered savings of £850 million after five months long negotiations.

The parent company Tata Steel India has reported a loss of £582 million this quarter, partly because of its UK business, said the BBC report.
