Virtual reality for astronauts aboard ISS, thanks to NASA and Microsoft collaboration

The agency and the MNC have partnered to bring HoloLens into space

Here’s cool news for all you tech freaks out there. Mashable has reported that NASA and Microsoft are partnering on the HoloLens, a holographic see through computer that will bring to life holograms, on almost any surface. The two organisations have titled the venture ‘Project Sidekick’, which looks to bring holographic visuals to the International Space Station.

Two different modes

The astronauts on the space station will use the project in two different modes, the website reports. One is titled the Remote Expert Mode and the other, Procedure Mode. The former will use telecommunication application Skype to help astronauts to contact those on the ground. The HoloLens will help those below to see what astronauts are looking at, thereby increasing the ease of giving instructions.

The latter will be more of virtual reality experience for the space persons, where they will see hologram on top of the object they are interacting with.

Already tested

The website also reported that engineers of the government agency and the MNC have tested the HoloLens on low-gravity environments. The NASA plans to send this technology to ISS by end of the year
