₹1,550 crore invested in Shiv Nadar University

The investment is done by Shiv Nadar Foundation, and the varsity will launch three schools over three years

Shiv Nadar Foundation has earmarked ₹1,550 crore for investment in the Shiv Nadar University from 2015 to 2018, said Nikhil Sinha, Founding Vice Chancellor of the university. Sinha was speaking during the varsity’s first convocation on Saturday.

Under the expansion plan, the varsity is planning to launch three new schools over the next three years: School of Law, School of Art Design and Performing Arts; and School of Communication, he added. Infrastructure too also go through an expansion, with the completion of an advanced research complex, a faculty residence complex, an indoor sports stadium, and a new academic complex which will house the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Management and Entrepreneurship, and the School of Extended Education & Professional Development.

Investment research will also see expansion. “Our commitment to research will continue with an internal research investment of about ₹200 crore to date and an additional ₹550 crore earmarked over the next three years,” said S N Balakrishnan, Chancellor of Shiv Nadar University while speaking at the Convocation.

295 degrees awarded

A total of 295 degrees were awarded at the SNU Convention to students who successfully completed Bachelors and Masters degrees programmes in the academic session 2014-15.

Doctoral degrees were awarded to Padma Bhushan Fakir Chand Kohli (who is hailed as the father of the Indian IT industry); Sayed Haider Raza (Padma Vibhushan awardee and an icon of modern and contemporary art); and theoretical physicist Ashoke Sen (a Padma Bhushan awardee).

Higher studies

From the class of 2015 , 31 students have been selected for higher studies by some of the leading universities like Cornell, Columbia, New York University, Dartmouth, RMIT, Delhi School of Economics and Georgetown University.

Also, 95 per cent of the first graduating class were hired by coveted recruiters like Amazon, PWC, Cognizant, Tata, L&T, Shapoorji Pallonji, Dell and Schenider, among others.

About the university

Setup in 2011, the University today has 1,800 students pursuing degrees across four schools: School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Natural Sciences, School of Engineering, and School of Management and Entrepreneurship.

Talking on the progress of the Shiv Nadar University, Nikhil Sinha, Founding Vice Chancellor, said, “As we enter our fifth year, we see the University has grown considerably in scale and scope since its opening in 2011. We have made substantial progress towards achieving our goal of creating a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, research university. We recently launched a fifth school, the School of Extended Education and Professional Development, which is focused on extending the reach of the university by offering short-duration educational and training programmes to individuals, companies, and governmental and non-governmental organisations,” said Sinha.
