Finance sector is 15 per cent of global workforce: Sirisha Voruganti

The finance sector occupies 15 per cent of the total workforce in the world and the number keeps increasing each year. There are a lot of opportunities opening up in this sector and the policies implemented by the Indian government are very encouraging. Students have to acquaint themselves with the latest technologies such as blockchain and AI to grab those opportunities, said Sirisha Voruganti, Managing Director, JP Morgan Chase, while speaking at the 46th WiseViews Leadership Conversations, conducted by ICFAI. a

She holds a master’s degree in electronics and communication engineering and completed an executive management programme from Harvard Business School.

Digital disruptions

Speaking about digital transformations in the financial world, she said, “Transformation happens on multiple levels — at the architectural level, infrastructural level, and at the operational level. So, a huge amount of data is needed to manage each level. As a matter of fact, 450 PB (petabyte) of data has been transacted so far which is equivalent to 65 trips to the Moon from Earth and back.”

Answering a query in the interactive session, she said educational institutions should give importance to the latest technologies and train students accordingly as it will help them get better placements.

“Everyone has realised the importance of digital payments and e-commerce and the role it plays, especially during Covid times. Though people typically resist change in the existing systems, in the larger interest of the organisation, that change has to be affected.”

The conversation was moderated by Prof R Prasad, Director - Academic Wing, ICFAI Group and Prof Sudhakar Rao, Director – Branding, ICFAI Group. About 250 participants including researchers, faculty, working professionals, and students attended the webinar which was also live-streamed on the Facebook.
