IGNOU gets a Sindhi chair, to launch certificate courses soon

MoU signed between university’s Vice Chancellor and Vice Chairperson of NCPSL

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has established a Sindhi chair for promotion of research in the language and will soon be offering certificate courses.

The varsity had earlier this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Council for Promotion of Sindhi Language (NCPSL) under the aegis of HRD Ministry to establish the Sindhi Chair at IGNOU headquarters in the capital.

“We have signed an MoU to take a lead in initiating activities in collaboration with the NCPSL for the study and research in Sindhi language, literature and culture,” said IGNOU Vice Chancellor Nageshwar Rao.

“The activities of this Chair will be undertaken by university’s School of Translation Studies and Training (SOTST). The process to develop a PG Certificate in Sindhi-Hindi Translation programme has also been initiated,” he said.

The four certificate courses that have been approved by the SOTST include — Appreciation course in Sindhi, Foundation course in Sindhi, Diploma in Sindhi (with provision for exit after completing first 4 courses to be awarded certificate in Sindhi) and PG Certificate in Sindhi-Hindi Translation programme.

The MoU was signed between the university’s Vice Chancellor and Aruna Jetley, Vice Chairperson, NCPSL.

“Sindhi language has a very rich heritage which has its roots 7,000 years back. It can be spread all over world through IGNOU. It is not only the responsibility of Sindhi community but also other communities,” Jetley said.
