IIMC Director Anju Seth resigns

The Board of Governors of IIM Calcutta has accepted resignation

The Board of Governors (BoG) of Indian Institute of Management Calcutta (IIMC) has accepted the resignation of the director Anju Seth with immediate effect and has appointed Prof Subir Bhattacharya as the Director-in-charge.

Nearly a month after the institute’s BoG clipped her powers, Anju Seth tendered her resignation on Monday. Her tenure was to end in February 2022. According to sources, Seth had submitted her resignation following the Board’s decision of drawing various resolutions alleging the director of “wrongdoings” and also for allegedly infringing on her powers.

The BoG had met on Wednesday to take note of the resignation letter of the director Anju Seth.

The Board had recently divested Seth of her powers to make appointments and initiate disciplinary action. The institute’s director had written a letter to the government against the Board Chairman Shrikrishna Kulkarni and alleging the board of infringing on her powers.

The IIM Calcutta Faculty Association (IIMCFA), which represents more than 75 per cent of the full-time faculty, had in December last year, approached the Ministry of Education (MoE) expressing concerns over the “decline in the academic environment of IIMC, with faculty and staff shortages, and reduction in spending on research” in the institute.

“It was regretted that at the time of leaving Prof. Anju Seth has made baseless and self-serving assertions against the institute and the Board. IIM Calcutta will continue to be run in the best traditions of good governance and transparency,” said a press statement issued by BoG of IIMC.

The board would look forward to working closely with the Ministry of Education, faculty members, the staff, students, the alumni community and other stakeholders of IIM Calcutta to take the institute to greater heights.

“The BoG wished Prof. Anju Seth speedy recovery and best wishes,” the statement said.
