IIT Roorkee wins Microsoft's hacking contest

Contest aims to help budding technologists tackle offensive and defensive security issues

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee’s teams have bagged first and second prize while Indian Institute of Technology Bombay stood third in the Microsoft's national-level hacking contest Build The Shield 2016.

This year, more than 300 teams and over 1,200 students participated in the online qualifiers. Of these, 50 teams were shortlisted for the national finale in Hyderabad.

The contest, built on Microsoft’s Azure platform, aims to help budding technologists develop skills to tackle both offensive and defensive security issues.

Winners of the grand finale received pre-placement interview offers from Microsoft, in addition to goodies like Microsoft Xbox Ones, Windows phones and laptops.

“As security increasingly becomes top-of-mind for organisations around the world, Microsoft is focused on advancing the ways in which companies can protect themselves against cyber threats,” said Joseph Lindstrom, Senior Director at Microsoft Corp in a statement.

“Through Build the Shield, we bring together future security leaders to solve real-world problems. The talent and enthusiasm of the students that participate in these events helps drive new and innovative ways to think about security.”
