MDI wins Global Case Centre Awards and Competitions

The case study, done by MDI Prof and alumnus, raises questions about Amazon's workplace culture

Jyotsna Bhatnagar, Professor in Human Resource Management, and alumnus Shweta Jaiswal Thakur, bagged the Global Case Centre Awards and Competitions 2021 for their case study on ‘Amazon as an Employer.’ The case has been awarded the ‘Best Case’ under the Human Resource Management/Organisational Behaviour category at ‘The Case Centre’s 31st Awards and Competitions 2021.’ This is the first win for the authors and for MDI Gurgaon.

The case explores the unconventional office culture at Amazon. It was conducted as a follow-up to the article in The New York Times alleging that Amazon was doing an experiment in how far it could push white-collar professionals to achieve its ever-expanding ambitions. The case is extremely insightful as it allows corporates, scholars, and students to analyse Amazon’s workplace culture and learn from it. Moreover, the case takes a balanced approach, including both bright and dark sides. It further enables in-depth and critical discussions on sustainable entrepreneurial advantages.

“The background research for the case was daunting and enjoyable at the same time. We did many drafts, and our patience was tested while writing the teaching note. It is heartening to know that our case resonated with pros in the HR/ Organisational fraternity. Amazon is globally a popular brand and the case explores a sensitive issue and raises questions about compassion and business profitability. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to MDI for providing us with this unique opportunity,” said the winners.
