Tech start-ups among top-recruiters this placement season

Consultancies, FMCG majors also hire large numbers from campuses

Tech-start ups are among the top recruiters this season, while international offers from unexpected countries are the flavour of the season during B-school placement this year.

Rivigo, Ola, Amazon, are among the tech-start ups that recruited candidates in the roles of project manager and product manager. Consultancies such as Boston Consulting Group and Bain were also among the big recruiters this year.

More start-ups visiting campuses

“During the hiring season this time, there was a rise in the number of start-ups that visited the campus as compared to last year. There are many international consultancy companies setting up base in India, leading to an increase in the number of offers,” said Rahhel Kadri, Executive member, XLRI placement committee.

XLRI completed its lateral placement — which is only for candidates with prior work experience — on January 10 and will conduct a three-day freshers placement at the end of this month.

Delhi’s Fore School of Management, which started placements in November, has so far placed 250 students out of 270. The institute this time witnessed a new trend in the form of international offers from unusual countries.

“Earlier, a lot of offers used to come from West Asia and South-East Asia but this time there were offers from Africa too,” said Rajneesh Chauhan, Chairman, Placements, Fore School of Management.

With boundaries going up, many countries want to give jobs only to their own citizens, so the number of offers from countries that usually look for outside talent have gone down. On the other hand, there is a lot of traction from unconventional regions, as they are in need of skilled manpower, he added.

Overall top recruiting sectors

Like every year, this year too, consulting and FMCG were among the top recruiters.

In XLRI, the highest number of offers were made by consulting companies. McKinsey & Co, The Boston Consulting Group, Deloitte, EY and KPMG are among the companies that made the highest offers this time.

IMT Ghaziabad received the highest number of offers from the FMCG sector. “In FMCG, students ended up receiving offers from some of the best companies in India, including L’Oreal, PepsiCo and Reckitt Benckiser,” said a faculty member. He added that consulting/ investment banking was the second sector to see maximum growth in the number of jobs being offered.

The various roles which were offered by the companies included B2B and B2C sales, business development, financial analysis and product management.

“The placement season this time opened up new roles for the students of MDI Gurgaon, There were also new recruiters who visited the campus this time such as Zinnov Consulting, BNP Paribas and EXL Service,” said Kanwal Kapil, placement head, MDI (Gurugram).
